Noites do Mercado
Increasingly spread across the island and on different dates, the Christmas Market Nights are the best way to experience the true essence of Madeiran Christmas spirit.
One of the highlights is the night of the Farmers’ Market, held in Funchal, which always takes place on December 23rd. On this evening, people from all over the island come to the capital to do their Christmas shopping at the market and the surrounding stalls, which sell fruits, vegetables, sheaves, holly, and so many other things related to the Christmas season in our island.
As the night progresses, the peak of the celebration unfolds at the fish market square, where Christmas carols are sung. The festivities continue until daybreak, providing an opportunity to catch up with old friends and share the year’s best stories, all while enjoying homemade liqueurs and the traditional garlic and wine marinated meat sandwiches. This convivial tradition encapsulates the warmth and community spirit of Madeira during the holiday season.
